Wildlife at Fell House Farm
A place where nature thrives
Thanks to our sustainable farming and rewilding efforts, Fell House Farm has become a haven for wildlife. From rare farmland birds to hedgerow mammals and vibrant insect life, the landscape here is full of quiet beauty and life - if you know where (and when) to look.
Whether you’re watching buzzards from your cabin deck or spotting butterflies along a hedgerow walk, there’s something magical about being so close to nature.
Birdlife You Might See
Over 30 bird species regularly visit or live on the farm, including some that are rare or in decline elsewhere.
Look (and listen) out for:
-
Skylarks, Curlew, Lapwings – often heard singing over open pastures
-
Barn Owls, Buzzards, Kestrels, Merlin – seen hunting at dawn or dusk
-
Songbirds like Yellowhammers, Redstarts, Treecreepers, Bullfinches
-
Water and wading birds – including Oystercatchers, Heron, and even Osprey near Hallington Reservoir
Hedges & Woodlands
We’re actively planting native hedgerows and trees across the farm - creating wildlife corridors, shelter for animals, and long-term carbon sinks. Every hedge and tree helps:
-
Promote biodiversity
-
Provide food and habitat for birds and insects
-
Capture and store carbon naturally
Wildlife Conservation
We manage our land not just for farming, but for the species that live here too. That includes:
-
Creating mosaics of habitats through light grazing
-
Maintaining wet areas for amphibians
-
Protecting nesting grounds for rare and native birds
A Stay That Gives Back
When you book a stay at Fell Farm, you’re not just taking a break - you’re:
-
Helping fund wildlife habitat creation
-
Supporting endangered native breeds
-
Investing in sustainable land management and carbon capture
