Autumn & Winter at Fell Farm Hideaway – A Different Kind of Escape

3 min read

Discover the quieter side of Northumberland, where changing seasons, open countryside and cosy cabins offer the perfect opportunity to slow down.

There's something rather special about autumn and winter in Northumberland.

The countryside changes pace. The fields turn from green to gold, the trees shed their leaves, and the crisp mornings bring mist across the valleys. As winter approaches, the landscape opens up, the skies seem bigger and the peace of the countryside becomes even more noticeable.

Here at Fell Farm Hideaway, we love this time of year.

Our cabins are nestled within our working farm, surrounded by nature, wildlife and open countryside. Whilst summer has its own charm, the colder months offer something different — a chance to escape the crowds, enjoy the changing landscape and appreciate the simple pleasures of being outdoors.

Cosy Cabins, Crisp Mornings and Dark Skies

There's something wonderfully satisfying about returning to a warm, comfortable cabin after a day exploring the Northumberland countryside.

Whether you've spent the afternoon walking along Hadrian's Wall, exploring nearby villages or simply enjoying the quiet of the farm, our secluded log cabins provide a peaceful place to unwind.

Make a cup of tea, settle in with a good book, watch the wildlife outside or enjoy an evening beneath Northumberland's famously dark skies.

For those wanting a little extra relaxation, our outdoor sauna is available to book — particularly enjoyable on a crisp autumn or winter evening.

Sometimes the best breaks are the simplest.

Explore Northumberland Without the Crowds

Autumn and winter are wonderful seasons for walking in Northumberland.

The quieter paths, changing colours and fresh air make even familiar landscapes feel different.

There are lovely walks close to Fell Farm Hideaway, including Hallington Reservoir and Colt Crag Reservoir, whilst Hadrian's Wall, Allen Banks and the beautiful Tyne Valley offer plenty of opportunities to explore further.

For those looking for a full day's adventure, Kielder Water & Forest Park is approximately 24 miles away, around a 47-minute drive, offering extensive woodland walks, spectacular scenery and wonderful opportunities to experience Northumberland's dark skies.

And, of course, there's no obligation to go anywhere. Sometimes a gentle stroll around the surrounding countryside is all that's needed.

Life on the Farm Through the Changing Seasons

One of the things that makes Fell Farm Hideaway a little different is that we're part of a real working Northumberland farm.

Autumn and winter bring their own routines, with our Aberdeen Angus cattle and Dorset Horn sheep continuing to be cared for throughout the changing weather.

The farm is also home to an abundance of wildlife, something we're passionate about protecting and encouraging through our management of the land, hedgerows, woodland and pasture.

You might spot birds of prey overhead, catch a glimpse of deer or simply enjoy watching the countryside going about its business.

Every season brings something different, and we think that's part of the magic of staying on a farm.

A Little Time to Switch Off

Modern life rarely seems to slow down.

Emails, phones, commitments and endless things to do can make it difficult to find a moment of genuine peace.

We believe there's real value in occasionally stepping away from it all.

Our cabins aren't about organised activities or busy itineraries. They're about having the freedom to do as much or as little as you like.

Whether it's a romantic weekend away, a walking holiday or simply a couple of days without distractions, Fell Farm Hideaway offers space to reconnect with nature, with each other and perhaps a little with yourself.

Your Autumn or Winter Escape to Northumberland

As we head towards the end of 2026, we'd love to welcome you to experience the quieter seasons at Fell Farm Hideaway.

Our four secluded cabins — Hope, Hail Hill, HoneyMug and Wellfield — offer comfortable, year-round accommodation in the peaceful Northumberland countryside, near Hexham.

Bring your walking boots, a warm coat and perhaps a good book. We'll provide the countryside, the comfort and the peace.

Sometimes getting away from it all doesn't mean travelling far. It just means finding the right place.
